Interview With Doreen Yaffa
Up first in our interview series is Doreen Yaffa! Doreen is the proud founder and managing partner of Yaffa Family Law Group. Her experiences as a divorce lawyer and life coach have set her up to run one of the best family law firms in Florida. We believe that getting to know your lawyer is crucial in picking the right lawyer for you. Get to know Doreen! Why did you get into family law? Number of factors: my parents divorced when I was 5 and my father was absent from my sister's lives and liking the diversity of issues in divorce. Helping people navigate through the challenges of divorce and onto their best new chapter, whether it is valuing a business for distribution or parent-related issues, is something I find rewarding. Guiding people to recognize what their thoughts are about the divorce as a life coach helps me to offer the best of both tools to start a new life. Tell us a little bit about your history. I have been practicing law since 1994 and been board certified in marital and family law since 2001. We mostly handle divorces of high net worth individuals and challenging custody related matters. I became a life coach for those in divorce 5 years ago as a way to give back and help people get past the divorce and create the life they truly want. In fact, my husband, Jeff Wilson, I and have a podcast with over 75 episodes called "Life After Divorce" where we work together as coaches in our business called "Life After Divorce Coaching." I love practicing family law and helping people through a tough time on to their best life with the assistance of our amazing legal team. What's the most challenging thing that you encounter when you're handling a case? Issues pertaining to custody, especially when there is abuse or some other factor that places a child at risk are some of the most challenging matters that I have encountered throughout my many years of practice. I believe most parents truly want what is in the best interest of their child. However, in some sad matters this is not the case and so assuring that the court knows the factors and has the evidence the judge needs to make a ruling is very important. What do you like to do for fun? I consider myself a water person and so we are fortunate to own a boat that is parked in the canal behind our home that we enjoy for fun. I also enjoy lifting weights and exercising and spending time with our 4 adult children. Tell us something about yourself that the world wouldn't know! That I am self-made, having put myself through college and law school and then opening my own firm. I also am an avid reader and enjoy constantly learning, establishing, and meeting new goals. I am not a person who does well with being stagnant or complacent and as such I am always trying to grow and improve. It’s hard-working lawyers like Doreen that make Yaffa Family Law Group the success that it is. She is a leader in not just law, but life. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a divorce take in Florida?

In Florida, an uncontested divorce can be finalized in as little as 3–4 weeks, while a contested divorce may take 6 months to over a year depending on the complexity of the case and the court's schedule.

Do I need a lawyer to get divorced in Florida?

While Florida law does not require you to hire an attorney, having an experienced family law attorney significantly improves your chances of achieving a fair outcome, especially in complex cases involving assets, children, or spousal support.

How is property divided in a Florida divorce?

Florida follows the principle of equitable distribution, meaning marital assets and debts are divided fairly — though not always 50/50. Courts consider factors such as the length of the marriage, each spouse's financial contributions, and future earning capacity.

What is the first step in filing for divorce in Florida?

The first step is filing a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage with the circuit court in your county. You'll also need to serve your spouse with the petition and financial affidavits. Consulting an attorney before filing helps ensure you protect your rights from the start.
