Bring It On: Mind Management
Many of us are adjusting to what I have heard people refer to as, “the new norm.” If you’ve ever played a contact sport, you know what it’s like to physically have the air knocked out of you. Right now, the pandemic has knocked the air out of all of us. It may not feel like you physically can’t breathe, but you know what? It kind of really does. Think of a time when you received terrible news or something bad happened to you. It likely took your breath away. It may not have been physical pain but you definitely “felt it.” Individuals in the “new norm” may be feeling out of breath. Confined quarters may be bringing causing new realizations. Perhaps your relationship is in trouble, the child you are homeschooling has obvious learning issues or your spouse doesn’t want to be married. You may be feeling helpless. In fact, you’re not. There are clear choices on how and what to do. Are you utilizing your mind to create a thought that will result in something good or maybe even great?
It’s time to rephrase your thoughts. Here are a few examples:
Thought: I’m panicking and freaking out. Rephrase: I am going to focus on a thought that will result in something good. Thought: Everything is falling apart and I can’t control it. Rephrase: How can this make me stronger? What can I learn from this experience to make myself better and smarter? Thought: Life is hard, and this pandemic is making it harder. Rephrase: How can I use this time to grow as a person? While we’re doing this exercise, let’s give a big virtual high-five to every single one of our ancestors that went before us. They didn’t succumb to the pain of sleeping in caves, not having Starbucks, WIFI or toilet paper! The obstacles and challenges that we face push us to evolve. This is how the universe is and has always been. Right now, we may be dealing with a virus, economic challenges and relationships gone wrong but ultimately, we get to decide how we respond. Are we going to complain and cope with overeating, drinking and Netflixing? Or, are we going to choose to accept the facts and use our energy on the things that serve us, the people we love and the opportunities we have? If we can learn to handle the hard things, to deal with our own sucker punches, we will be so much better on the other side. Remember, you have the control. Embrace gratitude, appreciate your blessings and create good for yourself and the world. Stay health in mind and body.
