Don’t Get Lost. Get Focused.
The virus has created a lot of turmoil in our lives. From our professional lives to our personal ones, COVID-19 has created anxiety around a variety of aspects. And, the “new normal” seems to change weekly.
When we have a lot of anxiety and are overwhelmed, we get into a place of what I call hurried energy. Hurried energy is when we do a lot of things but nothing at all. We’re like a hamster on a wheel. We’re going around in circles and making no progress on our ultimate goals.
Sometimes I get a call from a client who is in the middle of three different things at one time. They’re keeping their mind busy with this hurried energy to distract themselves from their real feelings. They may be anxious about their divorce. They could be nervous about their new life.
It’s a state that isn’t sustainable or healthy.
Physically, we know when we feel this way. Some of us even thrive on this hurried energy. It’s an adrenaline rush.
But, we have to stop and take a step back. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed or highly energized, ask yourself:
What am I doing?
Why am I doing this?
Am I reacting quickly without real focus on where I’m going and what I’m doing?
What is my goal and how am I working on achieving that?
Then, control your thoughts. Remember, thoughts create feelings, create actions, create results.
Make purposeful action part of your regular routine. I take 10-15 minutes each morning reviewing my calendar and setting my goals for the day. Then I look at what those goals mean for the bigger future.
Close the door. Take a deep breath. Turn off your emails. Put down the phone and get focused.
Your future self will thank you.
Stay healthy in mind and body
