My Spouse Wants a Divorce – What Do I Do Now?

Uncategorized

Whether your husband or wife has asked for a divorce or gone ahead and taken legal steps towards one, your first step is to make an appointment to speak to a family and marital law attorney at Yaffa Family Law Group.

Even if you think you don’t need a divorce attorney or you and your spouse have agreed not to use lawyers, you still need to speak to an attorney to make sure you don’t make a critical mistake.  The initial call with a member of our team is always free and will give you peace of mind.

Once you’ve scheduled a call with an attorney, here are the next five steps you should consider:

1.Secure Copies of Financial Statements

Collect your bank and credit card statements, loan and investment documents, and any paperwork that shows liquid and non-liquid assets as well as debts.

 2. Safely Store Documents

Create a hard copy or digital file of all the divorce-related documents including the financial ones stated above and store them in a safe place. If you are worried about security issues, create a new email address to ensure that confidential information isn’t being shared with your spouse.

3. Ensure You Have Access to Funds

When you’re faced with a divorce, you’ll need to ensure that you have enough funds to cover your expenses.  Budget for your personal expenses and any funds you may need to hire an attorney and pay for divorce proceedings.

4. Keep the Children Out of the Divorce

If you have children, don’t involve them in discussions between you and your soon to be ex-spouse.  You’ll want to share the news with them when it’s appropriate to do so.  Our team can also counsel you through this process.

5. Seek Emotional Support

Whether you saw the divorce coming or were completely blindsided, divorce takes a large emotional toll. Consider seeing a therapist from the beginning.  A therapist is qualified to guide you through the emotional rollercoaster that comes with divorce, is oftentimes more affordable than using an attorney for this issue, and is qualified to assist you.

Each person’s situation is different so to better understand your next steps, be sure to schedule that call with our team. We’re here to help guide you through the process and get you to the next great chapter of your life.
