Things I Wish I Knew When I was Getting Divorced

Coping with Divorce and Separation, Divorce Process and Procedures, Life After Divorce, Looking Forward: Building an Amazing Life, SPLYTUP

So, you’re thinking about getting a divorce, or maybe you’re already in the middle of one. Either way, we understand it can be a wild ride. There are so many things to consider before starting the process and hopefully, sharing some of those insights with you will  make your journey a little smoother.

1. It’s Okay to Feel All the Feels

Divorce can be tough and even an emotional rollercoaster. One day you can feel relieved, the next you feel devastated. It’s completely normal to experience a wide range of emotions. Give yourself permission to feel everything and take your time processing it all. There’s no rush to “get over it.”

2. Communication is Your Best Friend

If there’s one thing that can make the process smoother, it’s communication. Whether it’s with your soon-to-be-ex, your lawyer, or your kids, keep the lines of communication open. Try to be clear and civil, even when it’s hard. It’ll save you a lot of headaches and misunderstandings in the long run.

3. Get a Good Lawyer

Seriously, get a good divorce lawyer. Even if you think things will be amicable, having a professional to guide you through the legal maze is crucial. They’ll protect your interests and make sure everything is handled properly. Trust, it’s worth the investment.

4. Understand Your Finances

Divorce can be a financial shock. It’s important to have a grasp of your finances before everything starts. Make a budget, understand your assets and debts, and plan for your future. If you can, talk to a financial advisor. They can help you navigate the financial side of things and set you up for success post-divorce.

5. Your Kids Will Be Okay

If you have kids, their well-being is probably your biggest concern. Kids are resilient, but it’s still tough on them. Be honest with them (in an age-appropriate way), reassure them that both parents still love them, and try to keep their routines stable. It’s a big change, but with love and support, they’ll be okay.

6. Lean on Your Support System

Don’t go through this alone. Lean on your friends and family. They want to help, so let them. Whether it’s a shoulder to cry on, someone to vent to, or just a friend to distract you for a bit, your support system is invaluable.

7. Take Care of Yourself

It’s easy to forget about self-care when you’re in the middle of a divorce. But taking care of yourself is crucial. Exercise, eat well, and take time to do things you enjoy. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary.

8. Think About Your Future

Divorce is a huge change, but it’s also an opportunity to redefine your life. Think about what you want your future to look like. Set new goals, explore new interests, and start building the life you want. It’s your chance to create a fresh start.

9. It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Divorce is a process, and it’s not going to be resolved overnight. Take it one step at a time. Some days will be harder than others, but that’s okay. Just keep moving forward, even if it’s at a snail’s pace.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Professional Help

There’s no shame in seeing a life coach or therapist. They can provide a safe space to work through your feelings and help you develop coping strategies. Sometimes, having a professional perspective can make a big difference.

Moving Forward

Hopefully sharing these insights helps you feel a bit more prepared for what’s ahead. Divorce isn’t easy, but with the right support and mindset, you’ll get through it. And remember, you’re not alone. Lean on your friends, your family, and professionals who can help.  Here’s to new beginnings and a brighter future ahead!
